Movember: Changing the Face of Men’s Health

Sociomantic “Mo Bros” Raise Money & Awareness

For men, the practice of grooming one’s facial hair is as old as history, and similar to clothing and accessories, men have modified their facial hair to signal social status, power and sex appeal. Over the past years, however, sporting a moustache has gained a brand new meaning thanks to the now global fundraising movement called Movember.

Movember is the month dedicated to the finest Moustaches (or Mo’s, if you will) grown to raise awareness for men’s health issues such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer and male mental health. But how can a moustache make a difference in men’s health? The idea is simple. Each participant starts the month with a clean-shaven face and grows his Mo for the 30 days of the 11th month of the year. Then, with the sometimes-surprising Mo acting as perfect conversation starter, each “Mo Bro” is expected to help raise awareness and donations to support this cause of men’s health.

As simple as it sounds, it works: since its beginnings in 2003, Movember has inspired over 4 million Mo Bro’s and Mo Sista’s to participate in 21 official campaigns, raising over €430 million globally. The funds raised through the annual campaigns support programs that focus on research and improvement on the main risks for men’s health. Apart from the funded programs, Movember also aims at inspiring men to take action in their own health and well being.

What’s even more fascinating is not the global success but how it all started. A little over 10 years ago, Movember was nothing more than a fun challenge between a group of friends in Melbourne, Australia. They came up with the rules over a few beers – the very rules Movember participants still follow today – and just did it. At that time, it wasn’t for the buzz — it was a social experiment at most — but the guys quickly realized they were on to something. Wearing a moustache triggered so many conversations, they knew this could be turned into something truly impactful.

In the spirit of the first Mo Bros, this year, Sociomantic put together an official team to help the cause (and we also really wanted to see our colleagues growing those Mo’s). These fearless and beardless “Mociomantics” have demonstrated great motivation, initiative and endurance (which they needed for the group shaving). Halfway through Movember, the first results of their Mo’velopment are finally showing!
